My Facebook NewsFeed this morning was saturated with joyous announcements – “I passed the Bar! I’m officially a lawyer!”
I’m not exaggerating when I say that there were at least 20 of my friends (or acquaintances) celebrating this accomplishment today.
The last thing I want to do is undermine their achievements. Nobody should ever deny the many years of hard work and studying that is required in becoming an attorney. However, over 50% of the individuals making these announcements were less than stellar students with an even worse work ethic in the past. Can someone truly turn their character around that much in such a short period of time?
Lo and behold, the majority of these serial students do not currently possess a job. You can call me a pessimist, but economic signs and current market conditions tell me that they are going to have a hell of a time finding something that fits their career paths now that they are out of school.
Having worked directly with a handful of small law firms and legal lead generation companies like whocanisue.com, I understand the legal sector much more than the average joe. My experience in the space might even make me more qualified to fill some of the entry level legal positions that most of these graduates will be lucky to obtain. After all, these newfound “attorneys” have had little to no experience in the job market having been in school for the last 6 to 7 years.
