It takes a certain type of person to sacrifice their life for another. It’s a sacrifice that can not be undone. Nor can it ever be trumped.
I heard a song lyric recently that went something like this:
I’d take a bullet for you, you, and you.
But I don’t see very many bullets coming through.
So metaphorically, I am the man.
But literally, I don’t know what I’d do.
The gist is that it’s much easier to say you’ll do something than it actually is to do it when the time comes. Saying you’ll make a sacrifice isn’t the sacrifice at all. Performing the sacrifice is the only form of sacrifice.
Unfortunately for our armed forces, following through on a promise may ultimately mean sacrificing their lives for the betterment of our country. And today, we remember and honor those that don’t just say noble things – but they carry out the accompanying actions to make them the bravest type of person you can possibly be.
Happy Memorial Day.
