I’m a Digital Handyman

Diversified entrepreneurs like me are probably constantly plagued by the following question:

What do you do for a living?

It’s a simple and necessary question when getting to know a person. After all, our work is our livelihood – and we spend most of our waking hours working on our crafts.

I’ve also tried to equip myself with creative answers to this question. When you’re a serial entrepreneur that does SO many different activities each day, it’s difficult to summarize it all with one single statement.

Here’s what I say now:

I’m a digital handyman.

This piques curiosity. You don’t hear something like that and just walk away. You ask follow-up questions. You try to dig for more information.

Herein lies the beauty of having a creative work description. You not only captured this individual’s attention by being uniquely interesting, but he’s now slated to absorb everything you say like a sponge. That means he’s not going to forget what you do.

By digital handyman, I mean that I find things that are broken and I fix them. Much like a handyman does for home repair, I do the same thing in the digital world.

We shouldn’t succumb to saying things like “I’m in sales.” That’s too generic and it doesn’t emit the passion you SHOULD have for your profession. Don’t undermine your value.

I encourage you to think of clever ways to describe your work. Practice it so that you can stand out at meetings and conferences.
